We are ramping up (literally) for Food Waste Reduction Month and Food Connection is joining forces with Chef Graham House and Chef Eric Morris at Wicked Weed Brewing's Cultura as the nonprofit beneficiary of tonight's Cultivated Dinner series which focuses on food foraging in Appalachia and not wasting anything. Our partnership with Wicked Weed Brewing has been vital to our success. They've supported us financially since the beginning.
Here is a 60 second glimpse into what Food Connection does rescuing food in Downtown Asheville. We are incredibly grateful for our chef partners and their staff for taking the time to wrap up and label their leftover food AND call Food Connection. To date we have kept over 170 TONS of freshly prepared meals out of the Buncombe County landfill and we could not do this without the commitment of our food donor partners. This video just show three of our dozens of food donor partners.
Emma Maney describes her family's experience with the Mobile Meals Swannanoa Curbside Drive-Thrus which happen every Saturday at 11am. Not only do these meals help her family, they are able to take a few extra to their Swannanoa neighbors in need!
๐๐บ๐ธThe Food Donation Improvement Act was signed into law! Food Connection was lobbying in Washington D.C. this summer to advocate. This bill will clarify and expand protections in the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 and incentivize even more businesses/farmers/institutions to donate, instead of discard, their perfectly good food.
Here comes Mobile Meals! ๐ We are thrilled to have our new truck up and running, meeting our neighbors where they are. This new truck has onboard cold storage which gives us much more freedom to house and repack delicious donated food, and travel further distances. These heat and serve meals are available to ALL. No questions asked.
Ribs, chicken, pulled pork, smoked tofu, venison, pineapple and much more! Thank you to ALL who came out for the annual Knuckle Deep Amateur BBQ Fest and Competition in support of Food Connection! Our gratitude to all of the amazing chefs who participated in this benefit. All of the delicious leftovers were donated to Food Connection to feed our neighbors in need!
Pubcorps in Black Mountain has been busy creating nutritious and delicious heat and serve meals for Food Connection to distribute. We have taken meals into several neighborhoods in Swannanoa but most have gone to our neighbors in Leicester who don't always have enough to eat. We are so grateful for this partnership!
Food Waste Reduction Month BIG REVEAL. Check it out! (On this day we picked up delicious lobster Mac n Cheese and so much more) and took it to our friends at Western Carolina Rescue Ministries. We are so grateful to Chef Melissa and crew at the Omni Grove Park Inn for donating over EIGHTEEN THOUSAND MEALS to feed our neighbors in need.
It is much easier to dump leftovers in the trash than repack them into recylable pans, label them, cold chill them and call Food Connection... nonetheless staff at Givens Highland Farms is committed to making a difference in their community and caring for the planet by going the extra mile to do this. In this Food Waste Reduction video we let the staff know how many meals they've provided to their neighbors in need, most of which have gone to the the Black Mountain Home for Children and more.
Thank you to ALL who cooked, smoked, stoked, ate and supported this event for Food Connection! See more photos here.
