NONPROFIT FOOD CONNECTION HAS RESCUED AND DELIVERED IVER 670,000 MEALS TO WESTERN CAROLINA NEIGHBORS IN NEED
(Keeping 270 TONS of fresh meals out of the Buncombe County Landfill)
Since launching in 2015, Food Connection has provided over 630,000 meals to people in need by rescuing and redistributing freshly prepared food that otherwise would have been thrown away. This surplus food is donated for redistribution by restaurants, caterers, universities and retirement homes in Buncombe County.
“We continue to believe that no fresh food should end up in the landfill while our neighbors go hungry,” says Marisha MacMorran, Executive Director: “Food Connection connects the dots between those with too much food, to those without enough.”
Food Donors, including UNC Asheville, Ridgecrest Conference Center, and Givens Highland Farms, schedule weekly pickups from Food Connection. “Our team is grateful that there is an alternative to throwing out perfectly good food. Food Connection is the catalyst to get it where it’s needed most,” said Chef Melissa McKnight from the Omni Grove Park Inn.
Much of this food is repacked into individual meals and served through the new Food Connection Mobile Meals truck that goes directly into neighborhoods and to organizations such as Verner Center for Early Learning and In Real Life at Asheville Middle School, offering families a menu of selections from which to order, free of charge.
